Own Your story - Embrace Your Journey - Live Your life
“Do you wait for things to happen, or do you make them happen yourself?
I believe in writing your own story.” Charlotte Eriksson
We all have a story, the culmination of our life's journey and experiences up to this very point but how many of us are paying attention to what is being written, and if we are paying attention, are we happy with our story - are we doing anything about it?
Perhaps another question to ask is, Who is writing your story? Are you the writer and editor in charge, intentionally creating your life's story, or is your story at the whim and mercy of all the external forces life can throw at it - is your story stuck in your own past, never moving forward? Challenging thought isn't it! As Jim Rohn said "If you don't design your own life plan chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan and guess what they have planned for you? Not much!", and designing your life plan is all about owning your story...
Own Your story:
Owning your story is about taking ownership and responsibility, it is about self acceptance and vulnerability and being authentic, and in doing so allowing ourselves to begin healing...
Know that you and only you are ultimately responsible for writing and editing YOUR story, every chapter, every sentence! You can stop buying into the stories life has thrown at you, that you have thrown at yourself at any moment of your choosing, and take stock of the things you have come to believe about yourself. Then, reflect whether these self beliefs are accurate or even what you want, whether they are false stories that you have taken on, and decide if you're happy to continue to allow these false, unhelpful and dis-empowering thoughts, beliefs and opinions to still be writing your story - The choice is yours!
Ask Yourself; How much have these beliefs cost you so far? Once you begin to own your story you have the power, choice and responsibility to take control and start a new chapter, one that YOU will write, create and embrace. A new chapter, the beginning of your true story, authored and edited, designed and created by you! That's my kind of story!
Embrace Your journey:
When we deny our stories, when we externalize them and don't take ownership, those stories will define us. When we own our stories and take responsibility we take back the power to write a new ending, and choose what will define us.
Embracing the journey requires us to accept where we are now, to accept how we arrived at this current moment without harsh self judgement or beating ourselves up - To embrace the good, the bad, the amazing, the sad, everything really, and be honest with ourselves about the reality of our life, refusing to make justifications for past mistakes, failings or shortcomings - To embrace sitting with vulnerability and understanding why we feel certain ways and certain things, why we behave the way we behave and why we have done the things we have done.
Embracing our journey is incredibly freeing, it lifts a burden from our lives that allows us to begin moving forward and to experience the healing power of deep self acceptance whilst embracing the beginning of a new journey; that of writing a new chapter and starting a new story - one of our design.
Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light. Brené Brown
Live Your Life:
Owning our story and embracing our journey takes on a redemptive, healing quality and we begin to fully live our life, an engaged and intentional life. We open ourselves up to learning and growing from our past and into our future. Those things from our past that have previously tripped us up and got of off track, now through growth and learning allow us to intentionally begin to shape our lives. We put ourselves in the drivers seat of our life, take hold of the steering wheel and drive our own bus!
It can be difficult to let go of old beliefs about ourselves and even harder to let go of our old stories, however, I believe that the only way forward into a more fulfilled life is to take ownership and responsibility for our current and future story and begin the vital work of accessing where we find ourselves to be now, then take up the challenge to begin writing our own new story, the way we truly desire it to be, fully engaged and with intention.
And remember, you write your life story by every choice you make. At any moment YOU have the power to say: this is NOT how my story is going to end!
